Principal Engineer (PHP)

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to take a leading role in modernizing our flagship PHP-based web application. As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for setting the technical direction of our modernization efforts, influencing architecture decisions, and ensuring scalability, stability and performance of application workflows. You will drive strategic initiatives to improve system performance and ensure our application solutions align with enterprise requirements.

What You’ll Be Doing As A Part of Our Team

• Lead the long-term strategy and execution for the PHP application modernization, ensuring it supports the company's goals for scalability, performance, and maintainability.
• Architect and develop high-performance, maintainable PHP systems that integrate with existing and new platforms.
• Work closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to define strategic technical initiatives and drive their implementation.
• Influence and set technical standards for PHP development and performance optimization across the organization.
• Act as a subject matter expert for PHP development and application modernization, ensuring high standards for reliability, security, and performance.
• Provide technical mentorship and leadership to engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and excellence.
• Lead by example in writing clean, maintainable, and efficient code, and ensure high-quality code through code reviews and mentorship.
• Contribute to the evolution of engineering processes, promoting best practices, continuous improvement, and performance enhancements.
• Engage in external technical communities and stay up-to-date with trends and innovations in PHP development and system modernization.
  
  

What You Should Have To Qualify

• 10+ years of hands-on experience in PHP development, including deep expertise in common libraries, tools, and design patterns (e.g. Zend).
• Proven experience in modernizing legacy applications, improving system performance, and architecting scalable solutions.
• Experience with data management tools such as MySQL, Memcache, ElastiCache, and Elasticsearch for optimizing data retrieval, caching, and ensuring scalability of the application.
• Proven ability to design and implement data architectures that integrate with backend systems to optimize performance, reliability, and availability.
• Strong leadership abilities, with experience influencing and guiding technical direction at the organizational level.
• Expertise in designing and scaling complex, mission-critical applications in a PHP environment.
• Solid understanding of performance optimization, troubleshooting, and scalability best practices for PHP applications.
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience with full-stack development, including front-end technologies (e.g., JavaScript, HTML, CSS) and back-end integrations.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  
  

Ideally, You Would Also Have These

• Advanced knowledge of observability tools such as Dynatrace or New Relic and hands-on experience in identifying and resolving performance and stability issues.
• Experience with enterprise-level software solutions and handling high-traffic, mission-critical applications.
• Familiarity with security best practices, API security protocols (OAuth, JWT), and performance optimization techniques.
• Hands on experience with Node.JS and React.JS.
• Experience in Healthcare IT is beneficial, but not required.
