Job Overview

The Technical Specialist I, Zero Waste position in the Energy, Biomaterials, and Circularity (EBC) department involves working directly with the Zero Waste program, and other programs on an as needed basis. The primary responsibilities of the Technical Specialist include performing document reviews as well as remote and onsite audits for clients, doing technical reviews of audit reports submitted by auditors, managing administrative tasks, audit project coordination, and reviewing corrective action plans and other audit-related documents. This position is also responsible for documentation and review of all the above-mentioned activities on an ongoing basis in the SCS database, and support in document and procedure development. This position requires travel approximately 25-35% of the time.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all program staff, clients, and contractors to ensure success of projects
  • Support the documentation, communication, and closure of audit findings
  • Support the verification of audit expenses
  • Keep project log updated daily based on project progress
  • Create budget for each project
  • Manage client activities and auditor qualifications in Salesforce as needed to advance project or program

Auditing and Technical Expertise

  • Conduct timely desk audits according to the standard including review of management documentation, internal audits, training documents, and diversion calculators, and data verification, sampling, and complete submission
  • Conduct timely remote and on-site audits including facility walk-through to verify waste streams and staff interviews
  • Conduct technical reviews (with increasing complexity over time) with eventual responsibility to grant certification decisions
  • Travel up to 35% of the time is expected; additional travel may be requested
  • Participate in bespoke verification projects, activities similar to those of certification projects

Quality and Program Development

  • Support the preparation and response to internal audits and external accreditation audits, including collaboration with Quality Assurance team
  • Support the SCS quality management system through maintenance of competency records including training log, completed calibration activities, and program quality management documents (program quality manual, auditor manual, email templates, budget template, Zero Waste specific program documentation, and other program documents)
  • Support the periodic update of the Zero Waste standard, creation of training materials and training planning for contract auditors, and with development of marketing collateral
  • Develop and update new program templates, as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field (e.g. chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related) and
  • 2+ years of professional experience in a related sector
  • Excellent technical writing, observation, and data management skills, strong communication, and demonstrated abilities in critical analysis
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience in project management or administration
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; advanced level in Excel
  • Fluency in English with experience that involves professional and technical verbal and written communication
  • Initiative and ability to work independently, responsive and adaptive to a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Scope-specific work or study experience, and/or applied experience in a waste management company, waste consulting, or waste management role at company of employment
  • Proficiency in Salesforce and database management systems
  • Experience with third-party auditing, certification systems, or other applicable industry standards and/or knowledge

Working Remotely

SCS is recruiting all open roles to be remote; allowing our employees the ability to work flexibly and allowing SCS as a company to diversify the experience and perspectives of our growing workforce. This is a home-office based role and may include travel with local, domestic, and/or international trips. Details will be clarified during the recruitment process.

Estimated Annual Salary

$21,500 - $26,000 USD
