Job description

We are in search of a Director – Energy Policy, who will serve as a senior policy analyst for institutional investor clients, largely hedge funds.  The position is responsible for developing high-quality investment ideas based on rigorous policy analysis and for consistently covering policy developments across the energy sector for our capital markets clients.  The ideal candidate will have exceptional analytical and communication skills, and a demonstrated interest in energy investing and energy policy.  A successful candidate will be a highly qualified professional with at least 12 years of experience in policy research for institutional investors, energy equity research, investment banking, buy-side investing or a related field.   

Title may be adjusted based on experience. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Analyzing the risks and opportunities presented to publicly traded securities by public policy (including but not limited to regulation, legislation, government enforcement, and litigation) 
  • Developing market-leading coverage across the energy sector - including clean energy, oil & gas, infrastructure & industrials, metals & mining, power & utilities, and clean fuels & transportation.  
  • Authoring high-quality research reports and presentations for Capstone’s capital markets clients (hedge funds, mutual funds and private credit investors)  
  • Responding to questions from capital markets clients in a thoughtful and timely manner 
  • Hosting high-quality client conference calls and in-person events, including in-person marketing trips 

Qualifications 

Successful candidates will possess the following attributes: 

  • Demonstrated expertise within the energy sector, including clean energy, oil & gas, infrastructure & industrials, metals & mining and clean fuels & transportation. 
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas to clients – in-person, remotely and in writing through value-additive research reports 
  • Strong client servicing and interpersonal skills 
  • The ability to develop and discern high-quality, value-oriented investment ideas  
  • Ability to self-motivate, work independently, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment 
  • Passion for combining government policy with investing 

Education and Experience Requirements: 

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree required 
  • Graduate degree or CFA preferred 
  • At least 12 years of experience in policy research for institutional investors, energy equity research, investment banking, buy-side investing or a related field 
  • High academic achievement  
  • Strong MS Excel skills  
  • Must be eligible to work in the US without employer sponsorship

Capstone offers a competitive benefits package, including health, vision, dental insurance, paid vacation, travel stipend and 401(k). The expected compensation for this role will be $190,000+ base salary plus bonus, commensurate with experience.

This position is based in our Washington, DC office. Capstone is in-person Monday thru Thursday with flexible work from home Fridays.
