As the preeminent international service organization of the United States, the Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad to work with communities and create lasting change. Volunteers develop sustainable solutions to address challenges in Education, Health, Economic Development, Agriculture, Environment and Youth Development. Through their Peace Corps experiences, Volunteers gain a unique cultural understanding and a lifelong commitment to service that positions them to succeed in today's global economy. Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 240,000 Americans of all ages have served in 142 countries worldwide.
The City of San Fernando in the Philippines has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Water Resource Specialist. Though the Philippines receives considerable rainfall each year through typhoons and storms, because of the influence of El Nino and groundwater reliance, access to water for Filipinos is becoming increasingly costly and inaccessible. This is especially relevant in the City of San Fernando, where a lack of freshwater resource and 100% reliance on groundwater has created a large issue for residents, which is compounded by pressures of rapid urbanization and economic development of the city. The city has been working to combat this through investing in water technologies and solutions, such as the successful operation and maintenance of the city’s septage system, the construction of three solar water desalination facilities and running of a successful coastal resource management program.
The PCRV will work with CENRO counterparts to provide technical input/recommendations on the preparation and development of the Integrated Water Management Plan (IWMP). The PCRV will also conduct fieldwork to water facilities and potential water resource sites and facilitate and attend consultation dialogues/meetings with key CENRO staff and other stakeholders.
Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in the Philippines together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
