Job Description

Summary
An international team doing biblical research on behalf of Bible translators everywhere is seeking a Computer Science Summer Team to support online collaboration through the development of innovative web apps for our existing site (https://www.ctp1.net/) and through the creation and maintenance of related analytical tools and/or websites.

In the immediate, our CS Summer Team members will join us in working on the Common Text Project, which exists to provide support for Bible translators and Bible translation consultants as they meet with text-related questions in the Hebrew Old Testament, questions that all but force us to make textual decisions. The project is data-driven and brings together the ancient sources (manuscript evidence in several ancient languages) and high-quality scholarship, past and present, to serve translators today.

For this position, you should be familiar with one or more of the following: web hosting best practices, database structures, general coding, website design, UI technologies, and/or theoretical aspects of computer science and data analytics. Facility in writing PHP and JavaScript would be helpful, but on-the-job tutorials might also be recommended to a candidate with demonstrable aptitude and interest. Some background in biblical languages, especially Hebrew, would likewise be a plus.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborating with the project manager and any other team members, your main responsibility will be to complete, test, and fine-tune a web app that has been designed but only partially built.  We would hope to have this app ready for deployment by the end of the summer.  If time permits, you will also have an opportunity to contribute further to additional CS-related aspects of CTP’s ongoing efforts.

Skills and Abilities

  • Writing and verbal communication
  • Ability to work with others to solve technical problems
  • Intrinsically motivated to contribute to the shared goals of the team
  • Ability to structure work and achieve assigned goals with constructive interdependence.

  • Ability to follow standards, policies, and industry guidelines.

  • Ready to learn and grow

Education

A student majoring in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field will likely be best suited, though demonstrable interest and aptitude gained through independent study and experience may be deemed adequate or even preferable.

Experience

Experience with coding technologies and software design techniques is expected, along with aptitude and interest.  A natural leaning toward innovation and learning will be highly appreciated.

Location:  Work from anywhere as long as you can maintain a reliable connection to the Internet.

Remuneration:  $18.50 per hour and approximately 20 hours per week until mid-August 2025
