Raising a Reader is 26 year-old, $5M national nonprofit organization, working in service to our network of 300 affiliate partners and 150,000 children and families. Our national office currently consists of a team of 16 FTEs. The organization is seeking to modernize our business operating systems and approach, including human capital, by optimizing 21st century technology and best practices to position the organization for future growth and scale.

Position Overview:
The HR generalist is a new role at Raising a Reader, serving as a critical force behind the organization’s mission to transform lives through the power of reading. In this role, you will perform essential and operational HR duties to ensure the organization and its 16 staff members are set up for success.
Reporting directly to the VP of Finance and Operations, the ideal candidate will have a passion for all things HR, an eye for details, a knack for creating efficient and clear processes and policies, and a strong background in multi-state HR compliance.
This role is ideal for a driven, collaborative, and organized professional looking to provide excellent service to a compelling early literacy family program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The HR Generalist will:
Partner with the CEO and Executive Team to provide guidance on process and policy development and revisions for foundational HR practices, including onboarding and offboarding, payroll, benefits management, etc.
Lead performance management, and support with compensation review and planning.
Manage employee relations - including manager and employee coaching, leave management, and the like. Advise the executive team and people managers on HR matters, as needed.
Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Review and revise employee records to ensure they are accurate, complete, and appropriately managed.
Perform general administrative duties.
Other duties as assigned.
This role will work closely with internal and external stakeholders. Raising a Reader utilizes ADP Total Source as their PEO and other consultants that support HR and talent practices.

Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in an HR leadership role advising senior leaders on HR matters. An advanced degree or related certification (SPHR, PHR) is a plus.
Must have experience working in and understanding California employment law, as well as other states.
Track record of consistent, accurate, and timely multi-state payroll experience.
Proven track record of building and managing effective HR processes in a matrixed, national organization.
Must have integrity, and the ability to hold sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Demonstrated relationship management experience as well as strong organizational, time management, and project management skills that result in accurate results and strong accountability.
Be a great listener with basic business intuition.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal and facilitation skills.
Strong problem solver with the ability to make quick, sound decisions and the ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Positive, can-do attitude with a solutions-oriented mindset.
Attention to detail and the ability to operate with considerable independence to effectively establish priorities and work accurately under time constraints.
Proficiency using computers and software such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite applications, Monday.com (or related project management tools), Salesforce (or similar CRM), and/or the ability to learn new technologies and software quickly.
A demonstrated commitment to advancing racial and socioeconomic justice and working with students and families from diverse communities and backgrounds.
Compensation and Location
Pay: This temporary, part-time position's pay range starts at $45 per hour. Final compensation amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and geographic market, and may vary from the amounts provided.
Duration: 10-20 hours per week (approximately); ideally starting mid-June and ending December 2025
Schedule: while the hours and days are somewhat flexible during standard business hours, this role must be available Monday - Wednesday (minimally)
Benefits: This position does not qualify for group health benefits, and will accrue sick time as required by law.
Location: Remote within the U.S. While all U.S. states will be considered, there is a preference to hire candidates within California.
Travel: Travel will unlikely be required for this position.
