The Opportunity 

 

Are you a junior, senior or graduate student interested in a career in the non-profit sector? Room to Read has an opportunity to get a look behind the scenes in our global program operations department as a summer intern. Using your exceptional writing, research and planning skills, you’ll support improvements to the intranet site and internal file management system, identify learning resources for the team, find speaking opportunities and conferences, assist with planning a global partner summit and help create a partnership toolkit. 

 

This is a unique chance to gain hands-on experience with an internationally renowned organization and will be a great addition to your resume. You’ll make valuable connections, get insights into the workings of non-profit program management, and obtain an edge in the job market. 

 

This role reports to the Associate Director of Program Operations and can be done remotely from anywhere in the US. The anticipated duration is from June 1 through August 31, 2025, with the potential to extend. Time commitment is 10-20 hours per week.

What You’ll Do: 

 

Internal Project Management Systems:  

  • Intranet management: Work in collaboration with Room to Read project managers to update the internal intranet site for global projects, including project page reformatting; drafting, proofreading, and/or posting news posts; and general upkeep;  

  • File management: Support the migration of Room to Read project files to a new file management system, including supporting training on the new folder system, assisting Project Managers with file migration, and conducting quality assurance checks.   

 

Professional Development for Project Management:  

  • Learning resource research. Identify and collate learning resources to support professional development for project management in Room to Read, including resources for an internal “Project Management 101” course to more advanced online course certifications;   

  • Global conference research. Identify global speaking opportunities and conferences for Room to Read colleagues, focused on Project Management, literacy, girls' education, development, and other areas that align with the core competencies of Room to Read 

 

Partnerships: 

  • Meeting coordination. Work in collaboration with Room to Read project managers to support planning for the first virtual Global Partner Summit, including supporting the development of a work plan, agenda, and presentation materials; scheduling and coordinating with global partners and Room to Read colleagues; and liaising with the Room to Read IT team and other departments.   

  • Partnership Toolkit development. Support the ongoing development of resources for the first Room to Read Partnership Toolkit, including drafting short summaries, editing, and formatting toolkit sections 

 

 

 

What You’ll Bring: 

Required:  

  • B.S./B.A. or M.A. in progress with course work in relevant subject 

  • Strong coordination, planning and organizational skills 

  • Polished and professional writing, editing, and proofreading skills 

  • Creative research abilities 

  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people 

  • Adept at using Microsoft Office Suite of applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with Office365, particularly SharePoint, OneDrive, would be an asset.   

 

Preferred: 

  • Experience working with Microsoft internet sites and pages

While this is an unpaid internship, your work will directly support our goal to eradicate illiteracy and promote gender equality in emerging communities. 

 

By the end of the internship, you will have gained experience in non-profit intranet management, planning large virtual events for global partners, and creating partnership toolkits, and will have developed a deeper understanding of the professional development needs of nonprofit/project management professionals.
