The Role

At ENG, the Job Captain position includes a wide variety of activities and responsibilities that can include, but are not limited to, the statements below. This job description is subject to change as the needs and requirements of the job or the company change, and is also subject to the Business Unit, the client they work with, sizes and types of different projects, trades and teams involved, etc.

General Goals, Challenges, and Scope of the Job Captain Role

At ENG, a Job Captain plays a key leadership role in ensuring that projects are executed according to the scope of work agreed upon with the client. This involves coordinating workflows among teams of Modelers and BIM Specialists, while also managing schedules, timelines, and overall execution quality.

As the main lead of project execution, the Job Captain is responsible for meeting modeling and drawing objectives within the required timeframes and level of detail. A core challenge of this role lies in stakeholder management, as it requires handling communication across internal teams, vendors, and clients—acting as the central point of contact for all parties involved.

While this is fundamentally a management position, Job Captains are also expected to model regularly. This ensures they stay current with software updates, leverage their specific technical expertise, and step in when project scope or team availability calls for it.

The role encompasses three main areas:

  1. People Management – Motivating, mentoring, and supporting team members in their professional development.

  1. Operational Leadership – Facilitating both internal and external communication, managing feedback loops across stakeholders, and aligning team efforts with client expectations.

  1. Technical Guidance – Offering specialized knowledge on project-related technical aspects, leading project development, and providing training. Job Captains also serve as a client-facing representative, ensuring project outcomes meet both technical and quality standards.

QAQC:

At ENG, quality is a key pillar of our value proposition. We ensure all deliverables align with client agreements, meet quality standards, and are constructible. QA/QC needs are defined early on.

Modelers and BIM Specialists handle QA during their work, while the Job Captain performs QC before client submission.

Decision making extent:

Job Captains are responsible for executing the BIM strategy and overseeing the project scope. They make technical and design decisions within that scope, help define team composition based on skills, and manage workflows and time allocation. All decisions are made in alignment with Project Managers, BIM Coordinators, and clients through ongoing feedback and collaboration.
