Title:

Color Vision Scientist - Part-Time

 BELONG. CONNECT. GROW. with KBR.

Around here, we define the future. We are a company of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers, and dreamers. But we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely.

KBR is seeking a part-time Color Vision Scientist with a strong background in human psychophysics research to join our contract team supporting the 711th Human Performance Wing’s Operational Based Vision Assessment (OBVA) Laboratory. This role involves consulting on the design and execution of complex human subjects experiments focused on aviation-related operational tasks, with an emphasis on visual perception and performance assessment.

The Research Scientist will help develop and implement software and hardware solutions for color vision testing, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of ongoing studies. This includes integrating new technologies, optimizing system performance, and developing analytical tools to support experimental data collection. Additionally, the Color Vision Scientist will contribute to an ongoing program of research aimed at correlating visual perceptual abilities with aviation performance. This research supports refining personnel selection standards, assessing human performance using remote vision systems and head-mounted displays, and advancing vision screening technologies for military aviation applications. The ideal candidate will have experience in both software development and human subjects research, particularly in aviation or related high-performance operational domains.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, maintain, and document software and hardware upgrades to OBVA’s research platforms to support ongoing color vision research
  • Develop and oversee the execution of unique and complex human-subjects experiments focused on aviation-related operational tasks
  • Author research protocols for execution by a team of research assistants
  • Perform statistical analysis, interpret results, and present findings to stakeholders in industry and government
  • Author technical reports with contributions from other team members
  • Research and integrate new or alternative technologies for human subjects experimentation, particularly in future aviation systems and simulation environments.

Required Education/Experience:

  • PhD in a relevant field emphasizing human subjects research (e.g., Psychology, neuroscience, vision science)).
  • Extensive knowledge of the human visual system, including color and early visual processing, face processing visual performance measurements, and basic engineering principles.
  • Proficient in object-oriented programming and software development using Cg/HLSL shader languages, C#, C++, Python, MATLAB, Unity, and Unreal engine.
  • Experience using spectrometers, colorimeters, and light meters for display metrology and calibration
  • Ability to work independently and take full ownership of projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desired Experience:

  • A combination of vision science, display metrology, simulation, and statistical analysis experience.
  • A depth of expertise in stereo/binocular vision, color vision, and eye tracking
  • Experience in realistic flight control software development and integration
  • Knowledge of software automation, aerospace, programming language design & implementation

Basic Compensation:

$56.00 - $83.00

The offered rate will be based on contract affordability and the selected candidate’s working location, knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience, and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
