About the Role:

The API Gateway team is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a next-generation API Gateway infrastructure that provides secure, reliable, and scalable access to Confluent cloud products and services. The team is responsible for building high-performance, scalable solutions for managing incoming traffic and data access across various applications and services within a cloud environment. This team ensures seamless access to critical Confluent services globally.

As a Staff Software Engineer you will lead and drive innovation in the architecture and implementation of this gateway infrastructure for the company. In this role, you'll work closely with cross-functional teams to build robust solutions that deliver unmatched performance, reliability, and security at scale.If you're passionate about solving complex technical challenges and building the future of our API gateway, empowering developers and driving business growth, we want you on our team.You will be responsible for guiding the vision, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and enabling a high-performing engineering team to deliver a world class API gateway.

What You Will Do:

• Design and build a scalable API gateway that supports customer-facing APIs and internal service-to-service communication
• Architecting and overseeing the end to end design including choosing appropriate technologies, optimizing performance, and ensuring scalability to handle high traffic volumes
• Developing technical roadmaps by partnering with key stakeholders, identifying potential bottlenecks, and proposing improvements to system architecture
• Partner across engineering and other key stakeholders to deliver a seamless API experience for developers
• Evaluate and enhance the efficiency of our platform's technology stack, keeping pace with industry trends and adopting state-of-the-art solutions
• As a vital member of our team, take responsibility for developing, managing, and maintaining mission-critical services running on major CSPs like AWS, GCP, and Azure
• Enhance the stability, performance, scalability, and operational excellence across multiple critical systems
• Mentoring and guiding junior engineers on the team, providing technical guidance, and fostering collaboration

What You Will Bring:

• 10+ years of experience with designing, building, and scaling distributed systems
• Technical expertise to design and implement complex distributed systems, considering scalability, fault tolerance, and high availability
• Ability to influence the team, peers, and management using effective communication and collaborative techniques
• Experience running production services in the cloud and being part of on-call rotation
• Expertise in cloud-native technology, including networking & security
  Strong experience with cloud computing platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP, including their networking capabilities
• Proven experience in leading and mentoring technical teams
• Achieve results by creating alignment with different stakeholders to improve the development process and prioritization
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, mentor engineers, and drive project execution
• BS Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience. An advanced degree in computer science is preferred

This position has an annual estimated salary of 230,800 - 271,200 USD, and a competitive equity package.
