As the preeminent international service organization of the United States, the Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad to work with communities and create lasting change. Volunteers develop sustainable solutions to address challenges in Education, Health, Economic Development, Agriculture, Environment and Youth Development. Through their Peace Corps experiences, Volunteers gain a unique cultural understanding and a lifelong commitment to service that positions them to succeed in today's global economy. Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 240,000 Americans of all ages have served in 142 countries worldwide.
The Panamanian Association for Family Planning (APLAFA) has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Health Curriculum Development Specialist. Youth with Options (JCO – Juventudes con Opciones) is the youth arm of APLAFA, whose mission is to contribute to improving the quality of life of adolescents and young people, promoting and defending their sexual and reproductive rights, opening spaces for participation and facilitating access to comprehensive sexuality education among peers. The APLAFA team and JCO volunteers have identified the need to update the teaching methodological document, called “Un solo Currículo”, with important topics such as mental health, life skills, among others.
The PCRV will collaborate with APLAFA staff to review the existing training manual, confirm areas that are outdated or require improvement, and co-create new sections and pedagogical activities based on the latest research. The PCRV will also co-develop and co-facilitate training workshops for trainers on the use of the updated manual and co-design assessment methods to collect feedback from trainers and participants about the new manual.
Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Panama together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
